When Jacob “Jake” Tanzer of Portland volunteered to go to Mississippi
almost 50 years ago, he knew he would be part of a high-profile federal
investigation of three civil rights workers.
What the young lawyer did not know then was how much that case would change him — or the country.
“It
was a turning-point case, not an ordinary prosecution,” Tanzer told
teachers gathered at the Capitol for the annual Oregon Civics
Conference.
