TRAGIC: FT. Hood Shooting leaves many questions once again....


Five years after Nidal Malik Hasan fatally shot 13 people and wounded 30 at Fort Hood near Killeen, Texas, in the worst shooting at a US military base in history; people at the base and nationwide are reeling once again.
The latest Fort Hood shooting, which left four dead and 16 wounded Wednesday, is merely the latest example of the US military failing to learn and apply lessons from similar barbaric acts as they relate to mental health issues.

Army Spec. Ivan Lopez was identified as the shooter, according to authorities. He was among the four killed in the attack, taking his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot. Prior to the attack, he was battling mental health issues, according to base commander Gen. Mark Milley.

“We are digging deep into his background,” Milley said. Lopez “had behavioral health and mental health issues,” Milley said, adding that Lopez self-reported a traumatic brain injury and was taking antidepressants. Officials are investigating whether Lopez was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Investigating Lopez’s background after he was alleged to have shot others strikes me as being akin to closing the barn door after all the animals escaped. The Sept. 16 shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, during which former Navy reservist Aaron Alexis shot 12 people dead and wounded three before he himself was killed, was another example of someone who had a background rife with mental health issues had access to critical areas and had the means to pull off a massacre.
